For the first time in a Nintendo 64 game, players can compete against "bots" or computer-controlled opponents to hone their skills. Gamers can team up with a friend in the Co-op Mode, or engage in competitive deathmatches with up to three other players. The solo game features four difficulty levels and Controller Pak support for saving progress after each level. Over 12 weapons are available, including pipe bombs, shotguns, laser-activated trip bombs, grenade launchers, plasma cannons, shrinkers (reduce enemies to a fraction of their size), and expanders (used to inflate enemies until they explode). Notable features include bullet holes appearing in walls, destructible furniture, and interactive objects such as phone booths, toilets, pool tables, and arcade games. Duke Nukem 64 features 32 levels (six of which are bonus stages) that pay homage to science-fiction movies and television shows. While the environments are now in 3D, all enemy characters, items, and weapons are 2D sprites like the PC original. Visual improvements include new 3D explosions that leave behind smoke trails, updated scenery objects, and slightly different layouts in level design.
This 64-Meg update of Duke Nukem 3D, originally released on PC in 1996, features polygonal environments, new weapons, Rumble Pak support, and bonus levels from the Duke Nukem 3D: Plutonium Pak expansion. "Hail to the king, baby!" Duke is back with an all-new look on Nintendo 64.
